Why is a cup of tea so satisfying and comforting?

Why is a cup of tea so satisfying and comforting?

Why is a cup of tea so satisfying, and often the first thing offered when a person is upset?

Tea, which is derived from the plant Camellia sinensis, is the most consumed beverage in the world today. It has become somewhat of a mantra for many that a cup of tea can solve all of life’s problems, although it is only recently that scientists have discovered its impact on our mood.

Some studies suggest it is the actual tea-making ritual, whether for yourself or someone else, that is relaxing. Tea also contains the amino acid L-theanine, which promotes relaxation. In this sense, tea is unique in that the combination of caffeine and L-theanine means it may promote a sense of mindful alertness.

It has also been suggested that drinking tea lowers levels of the stress hormone cortisol. However, while there are hundreds of studies about tea due to its popularity, much is still unknown about how these compounds may help our mental health.

As to why tea is offered to anyone who is upset,  it is partly rooted in tradition. The physical warmth provided by hot beverages may link back to the emotional warmth of caregivers. It is difficult to stay mad at someone who makes you a hot drink, as there is most certainly an element of care involved.
